When to Consider Removing Your Wisdom Teeth

Biologically, wisdom teeth evolved in our mouth as replacements for the back teeth as they became worn out from past dietary habits. Today, however, our diet and the types of food we eat has changed and wisdom teeth have become more or less redundant and can be painful and problematic.

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed. However, if you're suffering from jaw pain, bouts of bad breath, frequent sore throats, and trauma to the gums around the back teeth then your wisdom teeth could be the cause. In most cases, there'll not be enough room in your mouth for wisdom teeth to fully erupt which can cause serious problems. The top wisdom teeth tend to stick out rubbing on the inside of your cheeks which can cause recurring ulcers that can be painful. A partially erupted wisdom tooth is very difficult to clean with a toothbrush. Once food and bacteria build up between the wisdom teeth, this can eventually end up causing gum infection and tooth decay.

If your wisdom teeth are causing discomfort, pain or simply threaten the health of surrounding teeth, you should consider having your wisdom teeth or tooth removed. Expert Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth removal is a very common procedure and a troublesome wisdom tooth should be removed with urgency before symptoms and pain get worse.

Removing teeth is usually a last resort and usually happens as a result of high trauma or disease. However, extracting wisdom teeth is the exception as they're considered most of the time to be 'impacted teeth' which has been blocked from breaking through the gum and can cause severe problems with your surrounding teeth and oral health. Often, impacted teeth cause no obvious symptoms or pain and are only discovered during an X-ray scan at the dental clinic.

Wisdom teeth sometimes don’t “break-through” the gums until we’re in our teens or early twenties. They're usually the last teeth to come up into our mouth. There is usually little to no room for wisdom teeth to come up at the back of the mouth and can start encroaching on neighbouring teeth causing them to move out of line or cause problems. If there is no room for the tooth to come up at all then the wisdom tooth can become impacted teeth or stuck underneath the back teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause severe problems or they can stay buried and cause no further issues.

An infection can occur when a wisdom tooth tries to push up through the gum. The infection will likely cause inflammation, pain and swelling. Swallowing can become uncomfortable and cause bad breath.

If a troublesome wisdom tooth is not removed it can cause a cyst around the tooth and start moving into the adjacent tooths molar causing damage to both teeth in the process resulting in the likely event of removing both teeth if they come seriously damaged and or infected.

When removal is the only option for your wisdom teeth, our experienced dental staff will walk you through the process and work with you to come up with a treatment plan before the procedure.
